The
Honda CRF300L

For our adventures, we’ve chosen the Honda CRF300L, a bike that perfectly balances rugged reliability with the versatility needed for exploring remote trails and challenging terrain. This bike is built for adventure. It’s agile, durable, and climbs like a mountain goat, making it ideal for the steep inclines and rocky paths of Lesotho and South Africa. Its reputation for dependability ensures that it won’t let you down, no matter how tough the ride gets.

To enhance your experience, we’ve tailored these bikes for long-distance adventures. They’re equipped with larger fuel tanks to extend your range between fuel stops, and we’ve added soft panniers for carrying your essentials without compromising the bike’s agility. These modifications, combined with the Honda CRF300L’s exceptional performance, ensure that you can focus on the journey rather than worrying about the equipment.

It is important to remember that we do not provide any protective gear for our tours. It is up to you, to make sure that you have the correct kit and that it fits you properly before you get here.

GEAR UP
FOR YOUR RIDE

Embarking on our off-road motorcycle tours demands vigilance, comfort, and a readiness for adventure. That’s why our mantra remains: “Dress for the crash, not the ride.” Investing in proper gear doesn’t just keep you safe. It also builds confidence so you can focus on the journey ahead.

  1. Helmet (Enduro-Style):
Designed for optimal airflow and excellent protection. Look for a secure fit, a comfortable lining, and a well-structured visor.
  2. Goggles:
Shield your eyes from dust, debris, and the sun’s glare. Ensure the goggles integrate seamlessly with your helmet.
  3. Body Armour:
    • Chest & Back Plates: Defend your torso against knocks and scrapes.
    • Shoulder & Elbow Pads: Whether built-in or standalone, ensure these pads remain secure during rough rides.
  4. Hip Protection:
Quality padded shorts or trousers can absorb shock and minimise hip injuries—an essential when navigating unpredictable terrain.
  5. Knee Guards or Braces:
Protect your knees from direct impact and hyperextension. Choose guards that combine durability with ease of movement.
  6. Enduro/Motorcross Boots:
Specially engineered boots help stabilise your ankle joint and protect your lower legs during off-road adventures. Look for robust soles and ample padding.
  7. Hydration Pack/ Camelback:
Staying hydrated during the day is absolutely essential. We recommend that you have a minimum of 2 litres of water at the start of each days ride.
Extra Essentials:
  • Layering: Moisture-wicking base layers help regulate body temperature.
  • Fit & Comfort: Make sure all your gear fits properly—poorly fitted equipment can be a hazard.
  • Maintenance: Inspect your kit for excessive wear and tear. Rather replace it well in advance.
  • Licence: A valid motorcycle licence is mandatory. We will check when you get here. No license, means you will not be allowed to ride.
  • Personal Riding Gear: You must bring your own protective riding gear for each tour.

By preparing correctly, you’ll enhance both your safety and your overall experience, ensuring every ride is as memorable as it is secure.

We reserve the right to turn away riders who are not wearing appropriate protection.

WHAT TO PACK

There’s a specific kind of freedom that comes with stripping your life down to what fits into two panniers. At Dust Trails Africa, we know that the best stories aren’t found in heavy luggage—they’re found in the thin air of the Lesotho highlands and the winding trails of the Drakensberg. Packing for the mountains is a balancing act: you need to be ready for four seasons in a single afternoon while keeping your bike light enough to dance over the rocks.

Here is our guide to gearing up for the ride of a lifetime:
