What to Pack for a Motorcycle Adventure Tour in Lesotho and South Africa

There’s a specific kind of freedom that comes with stripping your life down to what fits into two panniers. At Dust Trails Africa, we know that the best stories aren’t found in heavy luggage—they’re found in the thin air of the Lesotho highlands and the winding trails of the Drakensberg. Packing for the mountains is a balancing act: you need to be ready for four seasons in a single afternoon while keeping your bike light enough to dance over the rocks. Here is our essential motorcycle adventure packing list for gearing up for the ride of a lifetime.

If you’re joining Dust Trails Africa for an expedition through the Drakensberg and Lesotho, you’re in for some of the most breathtaking—and unpredictable—riding on the continent. One minute you’re soaking up the midday sun, and the next, you’re navigating a high-altitude chill that’ll make you glad you packed smart.

In the mountains, space is a luxury and “lightweight” is the name of the game. We’ve refined our gear list to ensure you’re protected from the elements without being weighed down by unnecessary bulk. Here is everything you need to pack for the ultimate mountain adventure.

What to Pack

The weather conditions in the Drakensberg and Lesotho Mountains can vary quite drastically on the same day—from chilly mornings to very hot conditions by midday, along with sudden freezing temperatures at altitude. We keep this in mind when packing our kit.

Each bike is fitted with soft panniers to carry your gear. Since space is limited, we aim to keep things as lightweight as possible.

Riding Kit

  • MC Jacket & Trousers: Off-road style with ventilation and armor is key.
  • Wool Base Layers: Ideal for that early morning chill.
  • Rain Suit: Sized large enough to throw on quickly during sudden downpours.
  • Knee Brace Socks (2 Pairs): Moisture-wicking, thigh-length protection.
  • Buff / Neck Tube: Essential for sun, dust, and cold protection.
  • Hydration Pack: Staying hydrated is vital. A water bladder with a minimum capacity of 2 litres is required.
  • T-Shirts (2–3): Use quick-drying fabric.
  • Casual Wear: Lightweight shorts or long pants for downtime.
  • Underwear: Laundry is possible en route, so don’t overpack.
  • Evening Shirt: One nicer option for dinners or exploring local sights.
  • Footwear: Lightweight sneakers or sandals. Comfy footwear is a must for chilling after a long ride; you’ll only have space for one pair.
  • Toiletries: Pack only the essentials. Leave the hair curlers at home!

Storage

  • Small Backpack (10-20 litres): To carry your water bladder and other essentials.
  • Soft Panniers (Provided): Limited capacity, so pack compactly. Pro tip: Roll your clothes instead of folding them.
  • 2 × 10L Dry Bags: To protect clothes from dust and rain inside the panniers.
  • Waist Belt or Hip Pack: For your passport, phone, and small valuables.

Travel Essentials

  • Valid Motorcycle Licence: Mandatory. No license means no riding, as stipulated by our insurance.
  • Passport: Necessary for travel. Ensure you have the required visas for South Africa and Lesotho.
  • Medical & Travel Insurance: Each rider must have their own. Please carry physical or digital proof.
  • Action Camera (GoPro): To capture the journey. Bring extra batteries and memory cards.
  • SA Adapter Plug: While many places use European styles, an SA adapter ensures you can charge your gear anywhere.
  • Ziplock Bags: A simple solution to manage wet items or keep valuables dry.
  • First Aid: We provide a general kit, but please bring any personal medication you require.
